Bio

Don served 36 years as a public-school educator. He served 10 years as a coach, teacher, assistant principal, and principal in School District 6 in Greeley, Colorado.
He then served the next 20 years as an elementary and middle school principal in school districts including the Lincoln Public Schools in Lincoln NE, and the
Poudre School District in Fort Collins, Colorado. Don’s longest tenure was in the Lincoln Public Schools. In Lincoln, he opened Anne Campbell Elementary, and was asked to serve in three schools in need of dramatic improvement. In 2001, under his leadership, Saratoga Elementary was selected by the U.S. Department of Education as a National Title
1 Distinguished School for dramatic positive change in the key areas of student achievement, discipline, and attendance. In Lincoln, Don was nominated for the Marie Bourke School Leadership Award, was honored by the NAACP Lincoln Chapter for significant contributions in Multicultural Education, and the Doctor of Inspiration Award by the Special
Education Department of the Lincoln Public Schools. In 2013, Don was named Assistant Superintendent in Weld County School District RE-1. He served in that role for two years, and then after a national search was selected as the school district’s Superintendent in 2015. Under his leadership, Weld County School District RE-1 moved all Schools from Accredited with Priority Improvement and Improvement to full Performance Accreditation, passed the first successful capital bond issue in 22 years, developed a comprehensive
strategic plan based on Board of Education Goals, and the Weld RE-1 Board was nominated for CASB All State School Board. In 2018, Don was selected as the Latino Superintendent of the Year by the Colorado Association of Latino/a Administrators and Superintendents and was nominated as Colorado Superintendent of the Year as part of the Colorado Association of School Executives educator recognition program. Don retired in 2019 and began work as an educational consultant and project manager with the MGT Consulting Group. Don is currently the Executive Director of the Colorado Association of Latino/a Administrators and Superintendents, and President/CEO of the DVR Educational Consulting Group Inc. The focus of his work is providing consultation, coaching and guidance in the areas of school and district leadership, mentoring, and organizational improvement.
